The WIH Book Club Mission

Designed to bring together peers in a safe space to have inquisitive, thoughtful and constructive conversations around complex topics that relate to the WIH mission and values. The book club will focus on book choices that relate to healthcare industry education, professional development, mentorship, self care, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Book Club Format

Participants are expected to obtain and read the selected book on their own. The group will come together for a happy hour and guided discussion to generate meaningful dialogue. Book club groups will be limited to 30 participants per book. Questions and a special gift will be provided in the participant’s welcome package upon registration. Conversations will include a prominent guest moderator from the healthcare industry to guide the conversation.

April Moderators:

Jalana McCasland

Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters

Jalana overseas operations for Children’s Medical Group (CMG), Children’s Surgical Specialty Group (CSSG) and Children’s Specialty Group (CSG) practice management. Jalana has over 20 years health care experience with the majority of it in the ambulatory setting, including practice management, call centers, telemedicine, managed care contracting and physician and regional outreach. Prior to joining CHKD, McCasland spent almost a decade at VCU Health System where she was the VP for Ambulatory Operations and the Executive Director for Regional Outreach. She also spent four years at UVA Health System overseeing their clinic operations and ten years in Texas at the University Health Science Center in Tyler.

Phillipa L. Anderson

Phillipa is the Owner and Principal of the newly formed pl Anderson Consulting Services.  Her clients are provided litigation avoidance solutions, including claim and alternative dispute resolution support, assessments of contract administration staff, as well as training and seminars.

Phillipa retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in 2015 after 33 years in VA’s Office of General Counsel including 20 years as Assistant General Counsel/Senior Executive.  She is the recipient of the Meritorious Executive Award. As Assistant General Counsel Phillipa was VA’s chief in-house and litigation counsel for those responsible for VA’s multi-billion-dollar acquisition, construction, and real property programs.  Her staff was made up of more than 55 attorneys. Phillipa was also responsible for policy oversight and mentoring of more than 50 regional attorneys.

  • The purpose of this book club is to read and enjoy literature and though provoking conversation.
  • Come prepared. Do the reading, review the questions, jot down notes.
  • You may find that you disagree with something that another member of the group has said.
  • It is okay to disagree as long as it’s done respectfully.
  • Inappropriate behavior and/or language will not be tolerated.
  • Please respect the authority of the moderator.
  • Keep on topic, but feel free to introduce information that is relevant to the discussion (historical facts, bio details, book background, related authors or topics).

Target Audience:

This event is a members only event.

We encourage all women in healthcare to join in on the dialogue.

Registration:

$10 will secure your seat in the group.

Participants must be registered to participate in the small group discussion.
