Dr. Lisa Cooper is an international thought leader on health disparities and a 2007 MacArthur Fellow. She studies how race and socioeconomic factors shape patient care, and how health systems, with communities, can improve the health of populations with complex social needs. A Liberian-born general internist and social epidemiologist, Cooper founded and directs The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity, where she and her team work, in partnership with health systems and community-based organizations, to identify interventions that alleviate racial and income health disparities and translate them into practice and policy changes that mean better health for communities. She has published over 200 articles and is the author of the forthcoming book, Why Are Health Disparities Everyone’s Problem? (Johns Hopkins University Press, Summer 2021). Dr. Cooper has been the principal investigator of numerous federal and private grants and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.
Melissa Sherry, PhD, MPH
Vice President Social Care Integration
Melissa Sherry is the Vice President of Social Care Integration at Unite Us, where she works to design payments technology and services to increase funding for social care and community capacity building. She previously served as Director of Population Health Innovation and Transformation at Johns Hopkins HealthCare, where she implemented population health management strategies focused on addressing the social determinants of health. Dr. Sherry specialized in translating available population health data into meaningful and actionable strategies to reduce costs, improve health outcomes, and improve patient satisfaction, with a focus on long-term sustainability.
Dr. Sherry has over 11 years of experience working on population health management and public health strengthening initiatives, both domestically and internationally, including work in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Europe. Dr. Sherry has worked with organizations such as the World Health Organization, Jhpiego, and Johns Hopkins International on initiatives to strengthen healthcare systems and improve population health, and has authored manuscripts and book chapters on topics related to strengthening population health through community engagement, cross sector partnerships and creating evidence for action.
Dr. Sherry holds a Masters in Public Health degree with a focus on Health Systems, a Certificate in Global Health, and a PhD from the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Sherry also holds a BS and a BA from The Ohio State University.
Liana Burns is a Strategy Director within Medicaid Clinical Solutions at Anthem, Inc. In this position, she serves as the chief of staff to the Vice President of Clinical Operations where she is responsible for defining strategy and ensuring alignment across a regional framework. She partners with executive leadership to define population health strategy, specifically focused on elevating interventions to address social determinants of health and health disparities.
Prior to joining Anthem, she drove operations for the Community Health Partnership of Baltimore while serving as a Senior Program Administrator for Johns Hopkins HealthCare. She directed implementation of the transformation initiative, comprised of six hospitals and three community-based organizations, deploying targeted interventions to high-risk Medicare beneficiaries.
With 10 years of experience, Liana has also focused on patient engagement – creating a nationwide patient speaker network, participating in advocacy coalitions, and working with patient support groups during her time at the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America
Liana holds a Master of Health Administration degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. During that time she completed a year-long administrative residency at LifeBridge Health under the direction of the CEO, in which she engaged in various projects both at the system and entity levels. She also holds a BS from The George Washington University.
